mrwayneadavis,
because of the lack of a standard for CIFS, there are multiple versions on the market. Adding that registry key works on some, but not all variations.

Do you get this error message during the backup or the associated verify?

Do you have space on a network drive hosted on a Windows machine that you can run a test backup to? This would be a great troubleshooting step.

You could also try using an external hard drive connected to any windows machine on your network as well.
