(1326 - Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.)

If you receive this message, it is because the default account (if scheduled backup) or the account you are currently logged on as (if ad-hoc or restoring) does not have sufficient user rights on the system you are attempting to access.

To resolve this issue, you will need to grant the account in question the following user rights in the local security policy (or domain security policy if on a Domain Controller):

"Backup Files and Directories"
"Bypass Traverse Checking"
"Restore Files and Directories"
"Shut down the system" (for some reason required for registry backups)
"Act as Part of the Operating System"
"Increase Scheduling Priority"
"Manage auditing and security log"
"Take ownership of files or other objects"

Administrator accounts do not necessarily have these rights just because they are administrators. Especially on SBS systems, there is a chance that an inherited deny may be causing you problems. If this is the case, try making a new account. DO NOT add it to any existing user groups (admins, backup operators, etc), but DO assign these user rights and it should resolve your issue.
